Seven Other Limbs: An Introduction to Yogic Philosophy

Have you ever wondered how to take your practice "off the mat" and incorporate practical ways to truly live your yoga? Many modern-day yoga classes focus on only one branch of the eight-limbed path of yoga, the physical and postural practice known as asana. But, there are seven other branches to the deep and transformative yogic lifestyle.

In an eye-opening four-week series of exploration, Sandra Sādhānā will clearly explain and show you the other ways that yoga can play major role in your life "off the mat". Learn how to cultivate a yogic lifestyle by gaining a fundamental understanding of the other seven branches through practical application and skillful means.

“atha yogā nuśāsanam.
(and now, the teachings of yoga)

— Patanjali's Yoga Sutra I.1

Each class will include grounding meditation, Pranayama (breathing exercises), lecture/discussion and chai tea!  Whether you are a seasoned yogi or brand new to the practice, you will no doubt deepen your roots and expand your practice.

Breath, Awareness, and Vitality: The Ayurveda Way

Part 2 of the Activate Ayurveda Vitality Two-Part Series

Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old science which brings together the qualities of each person, their breath, the seasons of the year, the food they eat, meditation and yoga to bring the best health to an individual's life. This, the second of two workshops, will bring the Power of Ayurveda to your life.

Is your energy so scattered you can’t focus? Is anger or anxiety making it hard for you to relax? Are you unmotivated to complete what you start? Align yourself with the rhythms of life, breath, awareness, and meditation, and your individual disposition (dosha). Use the balancing principles of Ayurveda with the balancing practices of pranayama (breath work) and meditation. Re-set your physical, emotional, and mental energy by managing your breath and your mind using what you know about your dosha. Practice yoga poses that suit you. Experience meditations which uniquely focus your mind toward ease and strength and your body toward maximum vitality.

This workshop is the second in a two-part series. You may purchase a pass for one workshop for $55 or buy the "Activate Ayurveda Vitality" package and get both workshops for $99. That's a total of six hours of interactive learning and in-depth instruction!

Part 1 of the series, Be Well, Naturally: Introducing Ayurveda, will be held on June 17.

Lighthouse Yoga Season Opener

Every summer, we gather on the grassy lawn in the shadow of the lighthouse at Ned's Point in Mattapoisett. Like a homecoming, it's at one level a somatic hot-air balloon ride and on another level a pleasingly slow plunge into the Grand Canyon of your physical and energetic bodies.

Lighthouse Yoga runs every Saturday from 8:15 - 9:30 a.m. in the summer months. We usually launch it on Memorial Day weekend and continue until after Labor Day, as long as the weather holds, which is usually the second week of September. Many students prefer to bring a blanket to lay underneath a yoga mat, water, sunscreen, and bug spray.

OUR SPONSOR! TODAY'S LIGHTHOUSE YOGA CLASS IS SPONSORED BY FIRST CITIZENS' FEDERAL CREDIT UNION! THEY HAVE SUPPORTED ANCHOR YOGA AND PROJECT WHEEL HOUSE SINCE DAY ONE AND I CANNOT SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THEIR TIRELESS SUPPORT FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES!

We are so excited about this year's Lighthouse Yoga series! There are 17 Saturdays from Memorial Day to Labor Day, so don't miss out on any of the classes!

  • We experience sensual awakening as we unleash animal energies and expand our awareness.
  • We enliven our funky, playful self and connect with other movers in community.

  • We empower ourselves and each other to liberate old cellular memories and cleanse the body and mind with sweat and breath.
  • We elevate our vibration and embody our hearts.

Travel this sacred and provocative journey, this hypnotic evocative flow, feel bliss, and reconnect with your innate state of joyous well-being.

In this class, we will begin with a welcoming ceremony, then move to a special guided JourneyDance™ that invokes and connects us to the powers of the lunar cycle and the universe, then be serenaded with crystal singing bowls while resting in savasana, and finally ground down through a closing ceremony.

Beginners welcome! No experience necessary!

Movie Screening: "Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare"

Mattapoisett Wellness Center proudly presents a free movie screening at the Mattapoisett Knights of Columbus Hall.

"ESCAPE FIRE: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare" tackles one of the most pressing issues of our time: how can we save our badly broken healthcare system?

American healthcare costs are rising so rapidly that they could reach $4.2 trillion annually, roughly 20% of our gross domestic product, within ten years. We spend $300 billion a year on pharmaceutical drugs––almost as much as the rest of the world combined. We pay more, yet our health outcomes are worse. About 65% of Americans are overweight and almost 75% of healthcare costs are spent on preventable diseases that are the major causes of disability and death in our society.

WE PAY MORE, YET OUR HEALTH OUTCOMES ARE WORSE.
It’s not surprising that healthcare tops many Americans' concerns and is at the center of a political firestorm in our nation's Capitol. But the current battle over cost and access does not ultimately address the root of the problem: we have a disease-care system, not a healthcare system.

ESCAPE FIRE examines the powerful forces maintaining the status quo, a medical industry designed for quick fixes rather than prevention, for profit-driven care rather than patient-driven care. After decades of resistance, a movement to bring innovative high-touch, low-cost methods of prevention and healing into our high-tech, costly system is finally gaining ground. Award-winning filmmakers Matthew Heineman and Susan Froemke follow dramatic human stories as well as leaders fighting to transform healthcare at the highest levels of medicine, industry, government, and even the US military. ESCAPE FIRE is about finding a way out. It's about saving the health of a nation.

For thousands of years sound, music, and rhythm have been used by indigenous and wisdom traditions for celebration, ceremony, healing, and spiritual growth. The wisdom of using sound and vibration is timeless and its effectiveness is now being confirmed through modern scientific studies.

Each concert will be a unique expression and embodiment of the moment. After a brief introduction, you will be guided through an extended sound meditation lasting from 60 to 75 minutes. You'll be invited to connect to body, mind, spirit with the support of the harmonic, rhythmic sounds of a variety of ancient and contemporary instruments from around the world including gongs, tingshas, Tibetan and crystal singing bowls, drums, rattles, flutes, voice and more. Afterwards, time will be given for sharing, questions, and integration.

Healthy Shoulders, Strong Core Series

Lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, climbing, stretching. The shoulder is the most sophisticated and complicated joint in the human body AND it's the joint with the greatest range of motion. Made up of bones, joint groups, ligaments, tendons, and muscles, the shoulder allows you to move your hand almost anywhere in space. Which is why many of us experience soreness from overuse or even injury in this complicated part of the body.

In this fourth and final class of a very unique four-week series of classes led by occupational therapist Deb Days Fraine, you will be given ways to work with shoulder issues in your yoga practice. Deb will work with you to design a home practice that will help relieve shoulder pain and prevent injury.

Did you know that strengthening the core can prevent shoulder injury? Learn postural considerations, ergonomics for work and home, plus core strengthening exercises. By seeing and feeling for yourself the complex system of the shoulder, you will be better able to move and modify your yoga practice.

Deb Days Fraine (RYT 200) has more than 29 years of experience in the evaluation and treatment of shoulder injuries and conditions.

Simply drop in to one class at a time for $25. No class passes accepted for this series.

Boston Marathon Benefit Day

Lisa, John, Chris, Meghan, and Tim Horan

Lisa, John, Chris, Meghan, and Tim Horan

Today's yoga and meditation classes are all donation-based to raise funds for our friends Lisa Horan and Jamie Van Ness and their running team for the Boston Marathon. Lisa and Jamie's team is hitting the pavement hard to raise money specifically for the Emergency Department upgrades to the Boston Medical Center.

The BMC's emergency room is sorely lacking the space it needs to meet the demands of the care it provides on a daily basis. They see twice as many patients as the facility was designed for, including the first wave of victims from the 2013 marathon bombing.

As the largest and busiest provider of trauma and emergency services in New England, the BMC never turns anyone away and serves more than 130,000 patients each year!

Bring your friends and join us in supporting this worthwhile effort. All monies collected today will go directly to Lisa and Jamie's team!

Vernal Equinox Restorative and Yin Yoga Workshop

The Vernal Equinox has long signified renewed energy, the end of the colder, more introspective months, and the beginning of the spring season. In yoga, it signifies a time for personal renewal, a shedding of the hibernation skin of winter, and a fresh start to the warmer days ahead.

Yin Yoga, the practice of passive stretching of deeper connective tissue, or fascia, allows you to turn inward to find the hidden gems of personal insight. Through longer holds of mostly floor-based poses, we are able to let go and relinquish ourselves to the forces of gravity and literally "hang" from the scaffolding of our own skeleton.

Intertwined with restorative yoga (the art of relaxation), this workshop will coax the body, mind, and spirit out of the spiritual fog of winter to emerge whole while connecting to the coming warm energies of spring.

This two hour class is expertly crafted with sound healing, light therapeutic touch, inspirational poetry, aromatherapy, and candlelight. Immerse yourself in self care on this day of new beginnings. Led by Jessica Webb.

Cost: $40 Pre-registration required.
