Would you like to fill a void of free expression in our community? Then check out this opportunity to stretch in a gentle vinyasa style flow that then transition into an open platform for movement exploration through ecstatic dance!
What is ecstatic dance? Ecstatic dance is a form of dance in which you, the dancer-yogi, steps out of your “thinking mind” and are lead instead by your heart to freely move as the music takes you, leading to a feeling of transcendence and ecstasy in the mind and body.
Dancing freely is an act of courage. It's about getting great exercise, freeing your mind and body, and connecting with your self and others in a safe and healthy space.
Dance as meditation is an ancient practice. Led by Nicole Winning, ecstatic dance empowers people of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds to express themselves freely. Nicole will guide you through the first 45 minutes of yoga and then will hold space on the dance floor for the whole class to seamlessly transition into ecstatic dance and free-form physical expression set to music.
Before each class we will take some time to explore guidelines for safe and conscious interaction. The codes of honor in an Ecstatic Dance class invoke loving-kindness-based guidelines which we all adhere to on the dance floor. These include: asking for and receiving consent if you want to dance with another individual; how to be clear and kind in saying no to an invitation to dance; and how to notice if others are content to always be ‘solo dancers’. It’s a language we will joyfully learn together so that we can explore, flow and feel safe all at the same time.
Come wearing comfortable clothes in layers and bring a full water bottle. With yoga and ecstatic dance, you will leave feeling energized and nourished in mind, body and soul through the opportunity to care for and express your body in this unique and illuminating way.
Class will wind down and ground with deep relaxation through savasana and focused breathing. Ambient music will continue to guide you inward as you rest and integrate, leaving you embodied and energized at the conclusion of our practice.
